After the end of the war, three million Ukrainian veterans are expected to return home. All of them will need a period of adaptation to civilian life, according to previous studies, at least 10% will need treatment for PTSD, including complex neurological disorders (traumatic brain injury and concussions), chronic diseases, limb loss, sexual traumas, and co-occurring alcohol and drug addiction.

In addition, children who have survived occupation, shelling, loss of parents, evacuation, and other traumatic events related to war will need special attention and psychological treatment.

This project is focused on building and development of a Specialty Trauma Institute that will have a capacity for 170 beds in residential treatment for trauma therapy, additionions, occupational and physical therapy for veterans, women, and children. The Institute multidisciplinary team will include a psychiatrist, neurologist, narcologist, psychologist, nursing staff, and chaplains. The Institute will also provide outpatient services and have a capacity for Christian rehabilitation programming, family retreats and educational training.

It is expected that chaplains will be a natural part of the multidisciplinary team providing the environment for Christian meditation, prayer, and spiritual healing that is so needed in Ukraine. Unfortunately, spiritual trauma, moral injury, and “why” questions are a part of any war. These questions will need to be addressed as people are seeking healing from trauma.

This is also going to be a training and research center that will have a capacity not only to adjust and collect evidence for the trauma therapy techniques in Ukraine, but also will train other medical and therapy institutions to provide trauma care by US standards of care.

The institute will provide evidence-based trauma and mental health treatment services in a safe, supportive environment free from the stressors of everyday life.

In May 2024, we will start implementing an important project – the construction of the Ukrainian Institute of Trauma Therapy, which will be located 30 minutes drive from the capital Kyiv. The Institute is to be partially commissioned next year and fully operational in 2027. This institute will provide comprehensive support to people who have suffered from trauma and psychological difficulties.
